How Tesla Powerwall Works?

Tesla Powerwall is one of the most advanced fully battery systems available on the domestic market. Just like any other type of battery storage, Tesla Powerwall gives you the ability to store energy for later use and works with or without solar panels. Tesla Powerwall is designed to maximise your home’s energy independence. Aiming to reduce your carbon footprint, and provide savings on your energy bill.

As a Smart System, Powerwall can be customised to your energy needs, learn and adapt to your energy usage over time thanks to the Tesla Backup Gateway. Each Powerwall system includes at least one Tesla Powerwall battery and a Backup Gateway. The Backup Gateway communicates directly with Powerwall and is the brains of the Tesla system controlling your solar energy consumption, time management, software updates, monitoring and backup energy requirements.

What makes the Powerwall one of the best battery storage options currently on the market, is its ability to support larger loads, thanks to its 13.5kWh capacity and high discharge rate.

As Tesla Approved Installers, the team at Deege Solar are specialists in installing the Telsa home battery. If you are a UK homeowner interested in having a Tesla Powerwall with or without solar panels, our team award-winning team can help either way.

Frequently Asked Questions About
Tesla Powerwall

Thanks to the recent UK government announcement of 0% VAT on battery storage systems, the starting price for a Tesla Powerwall 3 installation without solar panels, is now available from £8,500 (ex. VAT). This includes the installation of all necessary hardware, including the Tesla Gateway.

For the most accurate and up-to-date pricing, we recommend speaking directly with our team of certified Tesla Powerwall installers by calling 01332 479369.

As the Tesla Powerwall is a premium home battery solution, it does come with a higher price point. If you’re looking for something more cost-effective, we also offer a variety of reliable and budget-friendly solar battery options worth considering. Explore our full range to find the best fit for your energy needs and budget.

Tesla’s Powerwall 2 is a single-phase battery storage system. Whilst it is designed to work with single-phase residential electrical systems, you can still install Tesla Powerwall on a 3 phase supply. Simply by installing a sign unit on each phase or alternatively installing multiple units on one phase. The maximum number of units installed per 3-phase supply is 9 – 3 per phase, whereas you can install 10 Powerwall units on one phase to power single-phase loads. In the event of a power cut, Powerwall will provide backup power to a single phase you select.

With an IP67 rating, both the Tesla Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 are fully dustproof and water-resistant, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor installations. While the Powerwall operates optimally at temperatures between 10°C and 30°C, it is engineered to withstand a wide temperature range from -20°C to 50°C. Although both the Tesla Powerwall 3 and 2 can be installed outside, to optimise performance it is advised to avoid installing either models in locations that are exposed to direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, or near water sources.

Unlike many of Tesla Powerwall competitors, the Powerwall batteries use Preconditioning to improve charging performance and minimise the impact low temperatures have on the battery’s ability to charge. As the Tesla home battery can detect the internal temperature, when the temperatures are below freezing, Powerwall draws upon a small amount of energy from the battery to heat itself and improve the overall operation of the battery. This combined with Tesla’s unique liquid thermal management system, allows your Powerwall to operate at lower temperatures better than any other home battery, making the Tesla Powerwall worth it.

The Tesla Powerwall 3 is significantly larger and heavier than the Powerwall 2, primarily because it includes a built-in hybrid inverter. This all-in-one design streamlines installation by combining battery storage and power conversion in a single, compact unit.

The Weight and Size of The Tesla Powerwall 3 is as follows:

Powerwall 3 Dimensions: 1105 mm (H) x 609 mm (W) x 193 mm (D)

Powerwall 3 Weight: 130 kg

The Weight and Size of The Tesla Powerwall 2 is as follows:

Powerwall 2 Dimensions: 1150 mm (L) x 753 mm (W) x 147 mm (D)

Powerwall 2 Weight: 114 kg

The Tesla Powerwall Expansion pack is slightly lighter and slimmer than the Powerwall 3, and allows homeowners to expand the capacity of their Tesla system.

The Weight and Size of the Tesla Powerwall Expansion Pack is as follows:

Tesla Powerwall Expansion Pack Dimensions: 1105 (H) x 609 (W) x 168 mm (D)

Tesla Powerwall Expansion Pack Weight: 118.5kg

Tesla Powerwall is a great alternative or addition to a generator. Tesla Powerwall can act as an Emergency Power Supply (EPS) to any home, as it can detect outages and has the ability to keep your home running seamlessly when the grid goes down.

Unlike a Generator, Powerwall responds immediately, requires no fuel, or upkeep and doesn’t make any noise. Powerwall can be added to a system with a backup generator, through the use of an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) or a Manual Transfer Switch (MTS), to provide an alternative backup supply, when the Powerwall has a low charge, or if the load exceeds the battery’s maximum output. Although they can be integrated into one system, Tesla Powerwall will not charge from the generator, only the Grid and Solar PV.

In most cases, the Tesla Powerwall ticks all the right boxes for our customers, offering reliability, sleek design, and strong performance. However, at Deege Solar, we understand that one size doesn’t fit all. That’s why we also install a range of alternative solar batteries to suit different needs and budgets.

While the Powerwall remains a household name, there are several impressive contenders that offer comparable, and sometimes more tailored features. Here’s our list of the top 5 Tesla Powerwall competitors to consider in 2025:

Yes, you can install a Tesla Powerwall without Solar Panels and yes you can charge a Tesla Powerwall 2 from the Grid!

A home battery such as the Tesla Powerwall simply allows you to store electricity. This electricity can come either from renewable energy sources or alternatively the National Grid. Using a home battery without solar panels has become increasingly popular in the UK, due to the competitiveness of time-of-use tariffs such as Octopus Go. By utilising time-of-use tariffs, homeowners can simply charge and store energy from the Grid when the cost per unit is low. This is an effective way to reduce your energy bill, power your home during grid outages, and to top up your Powerwall during the winter months. This can be simply configured through the Tesla monitoring app. Hence why installing a Tesla Powerwall without Solar panels is a great alternative option if your home isn’t suitable for renewable technologies like Solar PV.

Yes, if you have an electric vehicle you can charge it using the stored energy from your Tesla Powerwall, making your car partially or fully powered by the sun. Whilst there is no direct connection between Powerwall and the Tesla Wall Connector, when there is excess clean energy generated by your system you can use this energy to charge your Tesla vehicle. Charging your Electric Car with the use of Solar Energy is a great way to maximise your solar savings, whilst reducing your carbon footprint further.

Yes, the Powerwall 3 is now available in the UK! Tesla officially launched the Powerwall 3 in the UK in June 2024, and it’s already making waves across the energy storage market.
