Is the Solar Powered Pavilion By Volvo The Future of EV Charging?

Volvo pure tension pavilion

Showcased in Rome in September 2013,  the Volvo’s new portable EV charging station is an award winning invention, set to revolutionise the transport industry. The Pure tension pavilion uses a solar panel based energy system to ensure maximum power generation to your electric car. Certainly, making longer car journeys seem more seamless.

The solar-powered pavilion has a lightweight aluminium structure, fabric and photovoltaic skin. This converts sunlight into energy, ready to charge your EV. Volvo’s Pure Tension has three key benefits: Its lightweight portable nature, the free renewable energy that it provides, and its value to extended electric vehicle travel.

Portable solar charging station

This award winning solar panel based invention is a combination of the work of Buro Happold Engineers and talent from the Los-Angeles based Synthesis Designs and Architecture team. The solar pavilion has a total of 252 photovoltaic panels which when exposed to the sun will generate enough power to charge a Volvo V60 system. Used to showcase Volvo’s new electric car as the part of their ‘Switch to Pure Volvo’ campaign, the solar PV’s pavilion like structure was designed around Italy’s exposure to sunlight. The solar panel surface is constructed from a CNC-bent aluminium frame, split into 24 sections, arranged based on the average annual position for any location in Italy.

The integrated photovoltaic panels, stretched over a web of carbon fibre rods make the system incredibly lightweight. The power produced by the solar panels is fed through wiring integrated into the seams of the high density polyethylene (HDPE) mesh skin. Directly connecting to your Electric Vehicle. The mesh membrane frame is made to be easily collapsible and to fit in the trunk of the electric vehicle. Easily erected or dismantled by two to three people in less than an hour, this solar panel charging system is one of a kind. The solar charging process currently takes 12 hours, however location and season will affect this.

Pure Tension’s Influence on Future EV Charging

The solar-power charging station has led to a different steer in direction for transport. Be it for private or public use, electric cars and buses have increased in popularity. And so will the need to charge these vehicles in a more efficient manner. As of 2030 there will be no more diesel and petrol cars sold in the UK, the industry for electric cars is increasing. So too will more smart technology such as the solar powered pavilion. But, with more vehicles and limited fixed charging ports, there will be a need for an easily transportable solution. Which is why The solar Pavillion is a future-proof smart charging solution.

Volvo’s Pure tension pavilion’s influence is due to surpass the borders of Italy where it was first revealed. But with a price point of currently $60,000, the design is yet to hit the market just yet.

Charging your Electric Vehicle With Solar Energy

Volvo’s Pure Tension Pavilion, isn’t the only way you can charge your car from solar energy. It is also possible to charge your EV at home through solar energy. Solar compatible EV chargers, such as the Zappi, can be installed domestically. Charging your electric car off your very own Solar PV system. Ensuring you get even more for your green energy investment. Charging your EV with your PV is an environmentally friendly way to reduce your electricity spend, as well as your carbon footprint.
